CONGRATULATIONS BRONCOS… MID-SUBURBAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!
On Thursday night, April 15th, our Broncos traveled to Buffalo Grove to take on the host Bison in this year’s “MSL Cup”, the Mid-Suburban League championship match. Our team played a spectacular game, starting out with excellent execution and precision. The ball movement, shape, timing and intensity were phenomenal. With this high level of play we created several chances to score while also limiting BG to very few. As the game progressed, Buffalo Grove slowly began to grow into the game, and they started to control more of the play than they were able during the first 20-25 minutes. At the halftime intermission the game was deadlocked at 0-0.
In the 3rd minute of the 2nd half, our team scored the opening goal on a set piece delivery, courtesy of goalkeeper Daniel Hesselbein, which found it’s desired target of Jo Cidulka. Cidulka’s redirection was quickly placed past the BG keeper by Nate Horn. It was a well executed free kick, just like it’s designed to occur when worked on during training.
Buffalo Grove would not go down easy, and while they created a few chances, none of them were too threatening, until one of their players made a strong set of moves to dribble just inside our defensive penalty area. Our defense collapsed onto the attacking Bison forward, making just a little too much contact which resulted in the referee awarding a penalty kick to the Bison. MSL East co-player of the year Brian Perez converted the spot kick, but not by much as Hesselbein guessed correctly and almost made the save.
The game stayed deadlocked at 1-1 for the remainder of regulation and two overtime periods. Our Broncos came close to breaking through for a second goal on a few occasions, but couldn’t quite get the finishing touch on the ball. This year’s MSL Championship would be decided by a shootout.
In the penalty shootout, Aidan Lew, Jeremiah Gascho and Junior Hernandez all converted their kicks… and Daniel Hesselbein made two critical saves to make our Broncos this year’s conference champions! What a great ending to this unusual season.
We could not be more proud of this team, for the class, skill and character they all demonstrated on and off of the field. We will miss this senior class more than we can express, and we thank them for all the effort they have given and the memories they have helped us all enjoy. GO BRONCOS!! YNWA!!
